Make a Plan for Your Family

•    Make a disaster supply kit containing all emergency items needed.

•    Decide where to meet in the event of an emergency.

•    Have an out-of-town emergency contact.

•    Make sure all of your family has contact information and everyone knows how to text.

•    Have emergency numbers programmed in your phones and have the numbers posted in your house.

•    Know the escape routes out of your home for each type of disaster.

•    Practice emergency drills every six months.

•    Consider special needs for those with disabilities, children and pets.

•    Know how and where to turn off water, gas and electricity. Keep any tools needed to shut off valves close by.

•    Do not actually turn off utilities when you are practicing.

•    If the gas in your home is turned off for any reason, only a qualified professional can turn it back on.

•    Make sure everyone in your family knows how to use your fire extinguisher.

•    Install smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors in your home.  Be sure to text them, and make sure you can hear them.  Individuals with hearing impairment should consider installing alarms that have strobe lights, vibrating pads or lower-toned alarms.

•    Keep all vital records, such as birth certificates, Social Security cards, marriage certificates, passports, wills, deeds, immunization records and any other financial information in a safe-deposit box or flood/fire safe box.
